State of Play Games announced today the launch of Lume, the hit puzzle adventure game made entirely from paper and cardboard, on iPhone, iPod, iPad and the Mac App Store.

Following on from its Independent Games Festival 2012 Finalist nomination in Excellence in Visual Arts, and its huge success on the PC, Lume brings a fresh and beautiful approach to games and has a tactility and charm perfect for the iOS devices.

Created by the makers of hit iOS game Headspin: Storybook, Lume is a game with a style unlike any other, with a handmade set filmed in sumptuous high definition. The iPhone4 and iPad versions now have a higher resolution than the original and look gorgeous on the devices.

You play as a young girl called Lumi. Power to your grandad’s house has failed. What’s more, he’s nowhere to be seen. Immerse yourself in Lume’s photoreal world, solve perplexing paper puzzles to help restore the power, and uncover a deeper mystery behind the blackout.

Beautifully animated with handcrafted care, this illuminating puzzle adventure game will test your visual, aural and memory skills.

The game is available to download from Thursday 23rd February 2012 for the iPad, iPhone, iPod and Mac App Store.

Luke Whittaker, Director of State of Play Games says,“We are extremely excited about launching Lume to the iOS market. We have had fantastic feedback from fans of the PC game, it’s been great to be able to bring it to a new audience. In fact we’d designed the original with iOS devices in mind and really delighted we can finally bring it to the handheld market, it feels like a perfect home for the game.

We really went to town with the style of Lume, building a model rigged with miniature lighting and placing the character in a real setting that just feels more tactile than any we could have created with 3D software. All this shines on on these devices.

We’ve also added plenty of additional detail for iOS, new sound effects and an improved interface for touch devices. To cap it all, the iPhone4 and iPad versions are now in a higher resolution than the original PC release, and look particularly spectacular.”

The Making of Lume – by Luke Whittaker

“Lume is a point and click puzzle adventure game with a unique idea. You’re actually exploring a real life model as you play the game.

The game really is made from paper and cardboard, and we built real miniature lights into the model, so that when you finally do restore power, all these intricate lights come on and provide lovely realistic pools of light and shade.

The initial idea for the game started with another of our games called Headspin:Storybook, where we created an interactive popup book. People felt a real connection to this very tactile object, so we thought we could push this idea even further. We decided that rather than making it just look like a game was made out of paper, we could actually do it for real. We wanted to say ‘look, this is something which exists, which you can touch, which you can explore like you explored things as a child’. We wanted people to have that connection to their experience.

Making a game like this meant completely rethinking how we went about design. We knew that once we had our model, that was it, we couldn’t change anything. So we developed a black and white wireframe model of everything first, and tested everything there. We were able to move puzzles around, test them out, and then finally say ‘ok’ we’re happy, let’s make it for real. And making it for real was such incredible fun, it was a whole new set of creative conundrums every day.“
