QuakeCon 2012, a four-day celebration of games and the people who play them, begins today and will run through Sunday, August 5 at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, TX. QuakeCon 2012 will feature North America’s largest Bring-Your-Own-Computer (BYOC) LAN party, a keynote from legendary developer John Carmack, panels featuring well-known gaming industry professionals, and contests with more than $150,000 in cash and prizes. Admission into QuakeCon is free.

QuakeCon 2012 kicks off today with a welcome address by id Software’s Todd Hollenshead and Bethesda Softworks’ Pete Hines which will lead directly into a keynote address given by John Carmack, co-founder and technical director of id Software. In addition to the keynote, this year’s QuakeCon will host a number of panels featuring prominent members of the interactive entertainment industry. Attendees will be able to check out panels such as The Game of Making Games, Designing Multiplayer Games That Last, GTTV’s Bonus Round,’ and Idle Thumbs Podcast Live: Arena. Panelists will include Chet Faliszek and Tom Leonard from Valve Software, Geoff Keighley, host of Spike’s GTTV, Blair Herter, host of G4TV’s X-Play, Marty Stratton from id Software and Ted Price, President and CEO of Insomniac Games.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to play Dishonored, the supernatural assassin action game under development by Arkane Studios, and id Software’s DOOM 3 BFG Edition, in Bethesda’s booth in the Exhibit Hall.

More than 8,500 attendees are expected to attend this year’s QuakeCon, with more than half that number coming from out of state and around the world – some making the pilgrimage from as far as Japan.  In order to ensure an event of this size runs smoothly, more than 235 volunteers will spend approximately 4,800 man hours setting up over 7.2 miles of cables, 1,300 tables and 2,650 chairs.

Attendees will take part in contests and tournaments throughout the show, vying for more than $150,000 in prizes.  A limited number of attendees will be given tickets to Ventrilo’s “Ultimate Power Up” Sweepstakes and one lucky winner will drive home in a brand new race-red 2012 Ford Shelby GT500 Coupe, valued at approximately $58,000.

“QuakeCon is the culmination of a dedicated group of gamers, ranging from casual to hardcore, who make the trip each year to visit with friends and connect with peers on the largest LAN party in North America,” said Todd Hollenshead, president of id Software.  “We couldn’t host this event without such a devoted community behind us, including hundreds of volunteers and event sponsors who are passionate about making QuakeCon 2012 the most rewarding yet.”

The free event is open to general admission attendees thanks to the support of id and Bethesda Softworks, as well as the QuakeCon volunteer staff and the 2012 event sponsors and exhibitors.

Doors to the QuakeCon BYOC will open on Thursday, August 2 at 9:00am and will remain open through 12:00pm on Sunday, August 5.
