Pros * Semi-famous game from years past.* Back story for Alice: Madness Returns Cons * It REALLY shows it’s age. Presentation : C Graphics / Animation / Sound
If I had to describe the visuals in one word, it would be “dated.” I mean this, however, in a “factual” context rather than a condesending one. That being said, it does make playing this game a bit hard on the eyes. Infact, I would go so far as recommend against prolonged play as it does tend to strain the eyes at times.
Quality of sound is slightly better than expected. Some of the sound effects are pretty generic, with the exception of a certain few such as the scream of a boojum dying. But, the music does do a fine job of giving the “twisted madness” theme of the game.
Single Player : C Game mechanics / Length / difficultyFor the most part, the controls have been reasonably ported to the consoles. I’m sure that most of it was based from the controls of Madness Returns. Unfortunately, the targeting system can be annoying at times. The game gives you a blue reticle and when you hover it over enemies, it circles around them making you think that you lock on to them. Sadly, it doesn’t so don’t let it fool you.
The levels generally straight forward, however I did find myself lost on multiple occasions. One might view this as being “challenging”, but I simply found it more or less frustrating. It also doesn’t help that I’m getting constantly bombarded by beetles while I’m trying to find my way around either.
Despite what I’ve said, however, Alice does give that “Twisted Wonderland” feeling. Even if you know the basics behind the original story, you will still have a sense of familiarity amoungst the abominations and locations that you’ll find. The voice acting is also fairly adequate for its age, especially the Chesire Cat (whos’ voice actor sadly did not make a return in the sequel).
Multiplayer : F Game mechanics / features / Online featuresNo multiplayer or online features.
Replay Value : D Lasting appeal / Bonus Content / DLC
In all truth, those who are a fans of this game probably already have it for the PC. And really, that is probably the better system to be playing it on anyways. The Xbox version is really meant for those who want to play Alice: Madness Returns, but want to play the original to get the back story (i.e. myself). However, I would also recommend the original so that one can see just how much has changed between the two games. Plus, it’s also free with the purchase of Madness Returns, which means you’re getting two full games for the price of one.
Overall : D
