You may recognize Jenni from the previous Cosplay feature we published a few weeks ago showcasing her incredible Samus-Varia Suit.  Luck for us, Jenni took to the time out of her busy schedule to sit down with us for a quick interview.

Are there any unwritten rules about Cosplay, especially when competing?
I can’t think of any unwritten rule right now, the most important rule is that you’ve made the costume by yourself and not had it commissioned or bought.

How serious do other Cosplayer’s take competitions, or is it a relaxed friendly environment?
On the conventions I’ve been on so far it’s been pretty relaxed and friendly I think.

Who are your biggest Cosplay influences?
There are many but to name a couple: Pikmin Link, Lillyxandra, Yaya Han, Omi Gibson and my cosplay buddies in Sweden.

What was your most difficult costume to create and why?
The Samus Aran Varia and Gravity Suit I made in 2010. It’s the most difficult costume I’ve made so far because of how complicated it is. The costumes took 6 months to complete and I had to redo several parts of the suit before I was happy with it but it turned out really good in the end I think.

Out of all your costumes that you have designed, which is your favorite to wear?
My favorites are my Varia and Gravity suits because I’m most proud of my work on these costumes and I love Metroid

Is there a character out there that you have always wanted to cosplay but have yet had the chance to?
Yes! There are so many characters I really want to cosplay but I don’t have as much free time to make costumes as I would like. I think my next projects in the close future will be Nina from Breath of Fire II and Lucca from Chrono Trigger. I promised my dad I would make a Link costume for him this summer too so I have to finish that costume first.

Is there such a thing as offensive Cosplay?
There probably are but I can’t think of any right now

What advice do you have to those wanting to compete in cosplay competitions?
  • Pay attention to how the costume looks after you’ve traveled with it/had it on for several hours, like Iron the fabric if needed, brush the wig etc.
  • Bring water and possibly some extra food
  • Don’t forget to relax and have some fun too!
While we have focused a lot on Cosplay for this intrerview, I understand you enjoy drawing and painting as well?  Do you have any future plans for your artwork?
We’ll see what the future holds. So far it’s just a hobby but I really enjoy drawing and hope to draw more in the future and become better.

Jenni, we would really like to thank you for taking this time out with us. We know you stay busy with all your projects and would hate to keep you from more awesome costumes.
