Want to hear our impressions?

It’s no secret that I’m an old-school gamer.  There aren’t many games out there that I haven’t played.  There isn’t a whole lot of info in this industry that I haven’t either read about, wrote about or experienced first hand.  I was really anxious to get my hands on the new Guinness World Records 2013: Gamer’s Edition and see what all of the hype was about.  This would be my first year seeing what all this book has to offer, so when GWR sent us a copy I couldn’t wait to dive in.

The title pretty much sums up the main outline of the book.  However, saying that this is merely a collection of Video Games Records only sells the product short.  This “Gamer’s Edition” is not only a collection of records, but a celebration of the gaming industry and testament to the importance of Video Games in today’s culture.  Video Games are clearly no longer just something you throw your weekly allowance at.  They are becoming more and more prevalent in the entertainment industry and with each passing year I can’t help but notice steady growth in the amount of opportunities to make a living being involved with Video Games.  This industry is here to stay and like any other great avenue of entertainment, there is a plethora of stats to record, keep track of and aspire to break.

But what does this book actually include?  You name it, it’s in here….  Want to know about The Largest Prize For A Call of Duty Tournament? You could also go the classic route and ask about The Highest Score On Donkey Kong.  What about the Indie Scene?  This book has more facts than Mario can shake a plunger at.  Want more console specific stats?  How about Android, iOS or even browser games?  Old to New, Small Budget to Big, this book just about covers all aspects of the industry I have grown up with.

The greatest thing about this collection is the diversity of content.  I touched on the stats portion of the book, but what else does it include?  Tips on how to become a record breaker, features on Video Game Weddings, Merchandise Collections, Celebrity Gamers, Video Games in Movies and a whole lot more.  Want to hear some of Tommy Tallarico’s favorite compositions? How about the steady inclusion of Zombies in today’s games.  There is literally something for everyone in this GWR: Gamer’s Edition.

I really enjoyed reading the sections chronicling the evolution of the different gaming platforms and the inclusion of rare and often unknown statistics.  Hearing past rumors or growing up before internet hit main stream can leave a lot of gaps in the history of Video Games and there are some really great sections in this year’s edition.  I also enjoyed the section showcasing the evolution of graphics with every generation on console.

The bottom line is that the Guinness World Records 2013: Gamer’s Edition is a wonderful collection that every gamer will likely get enjoyment from.  Whether you like reading the articles, discovering some of jaw dropping records out there, or just simply have a reference book to throw factoids at your friends, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of this year’s edition.  I found the book to be conveniently indexed and most things are separated by genre providing the reader with the ease of comparing similar style games.  The pages are full color and every empty space seems to be guarding another fact just waiting to be discovered.  This is truly a great companion for every type of Gamer.
