Stainless Games Ltd. announces the launch of Carmageddon for iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad. The game is a re-release of the original 1997 Classic PC and Mac driving game, featuring anarchic drive-wherever-you-like gameplay and over-the-top surreal comedy violence.

The original Carmageddon and its sequels caused a huge media storm, prompting questions in the Houses of Parliament, TV debates and reams of newspaper coverage – the game’s tongue-in-cheek violence being ideal material for a little press hysteria and political ‘outrage’. Patrick Buckland, Stainless co-founder and CEO commented, “Carmageddon was originally banned in several countries, but it’s now available in the Apple App Store worldwide rated 12+ – how times have changed!”

Neil ‘nobby’ Barnden, co-founder and Executive Director added, “We’re really delighted with the results of our hard work on updating the original game for the new generation of touchscreen devices. The gameplay has been improved over the original. And as well as recapturing the ‘feel’ of the original game’s PC and Mac controls, we’ve been able to add intuitive gesture commands and choice of editable control methods. It’s fantastic fun for your thumbs!”

Pocketgamer awarded it 8/10 and described it as, “…one of the finest car combat games ever made,” going on to conclude, “And it’s why a 15-year-old tabloid sensation is one of the most exciting iOS games we’ve played in quite some time.”

Carmageddon has been developed by a team at the indie development studio Stainless Games Ltd., that includes several members of the same team that made the game originally back in 1996. Proud of their independent status and their heritage, the studio spent several years negotiating the return of the Carmageddon brand. Currently working on a new title in the series, Carmageddon: Reincarnation, the intention is that all profits made from the sale of the App Store game will go towards funding the new game, which has already been the subject of a highly successful funding campaign onKickstarter.com. As a thanks to the Backers who pledged on Kickstarter, the game is available free on the App Store for the first 24 hours after launch. After this period, it will go on sale at $1.99/£1.49 as a special low price offer for a limited time.

The game will also be launching soon on Android devices. Stainless are currently putting the finishing touches to the Android OS version, which is on target for release by the end of 2012/early 2013.
